Elevate Mentoring: Transforming a Student's Path to Success

Princess, a 17-year-old sixth form student, recently participated in the Elevate mentoring programme with the Bank of England. Initially feeling out of place in the City's corporate environment, she embraced the opportunity to gain new experiences and perspectives.

Skill Development and Personal Growth

Throughout the programme, Princess developed valuable skills in public speaking, interview techniques, and CV writing. These skills proved immediately useful, as she successfully applied her new interview techniques to secure the position of Head Girl at her school—an achievement that had eluded her in three previous attempts.

The programme also had a significant impact on Princess's academic performance. She improved in subjects she initially struggled with, such as English, by applying problem-solving strategies discussed with her mentor. Princess learned to communicate more effectively with her teachers and approach challenging subjects with a more positive mindset.

Changing Perspectives

Princess's view of Central London shifted dramatically during the programme. She moved from feeling like an outsider to seeing herself as a potential part of the corporate world. This change in perspective opened up new career pathways she hadn't previously considered, including opportunities at institutions like the Bank of England.

"I used to think Central London lacked diversity and that I didn't fit in," Princess reflected. "However, this programme has changed my perspective. Now I believe I can actually be part of that environment and lifestyle if I put in the work."

Princess emphasized the value of being mentored by someone with relatable experiences: "There's so much to learn from this programme. Being mentored by someone who has gone through what we're experiencing is really valuable. They understand our situation and can guide us through it. It's reassuring to have someone remind you that everything will be okay."

Lasting Impact

The effects of the Elevate mentoring programme extend far beyond skill development. In her role as Head Girl, Princess now shares her experiences with peers, inspiring others to set and pursue ambitious goals. Her newfound confidence continues to shape her academic and career aspirations.

The Elevate mentoring programme proved transformative for Princess, breaking down perceived barriers and empowering her to aspire to roles she once thought were out of reach. Her story exemplifies the programme's potential to bridge the gap between education and the professional world for young students, opening doors to a future full of possibilities.
